Amazon in a storm over pedophilia book

An e-book that promotes pedophilia is for sale on Amazon.com and its presence is causing a storm of outrage. Amazon however has so far refused to remove the offending material, saying that to do so would be censorship.

The Pedophile’s Guide to Love and Pleasure , a self-published book that describes itself as a guide for so-called “pedosexuals,” is offered at Amazon.com. where the author states:

“This is my attempt to make pedophile situations safer for those juveniles that find themselves involved in them, by establishing certian rules for these adults to follow,” the author, Philip R. Greaves 2nd, summarizes the book. “I hope to achieve this by appealing to the better nature of pedosexuals, with hope that their doing so will result in less hatred and perhaps liter sentences should they ever be caught.”

It is a serious crime to engage in sexual activity with a minor and law enforcement agencies have been stepping up their surveillance of the Internet and social networking media in an attempt to root our the perpetrators. The Internet has made stalking and luring of victims easier than ever, with pedophiles often posing as youngsters and enticing children to post lewd photos.

In a statement, the company said, “Amazon believes it is censorship not to sell certain books simply because we or others believe their message is objectionable. Amazon does not support or promote hatred or criminal acts, however, we do support the right of every individual to make their own purchasing decisions,” the company said.

Most comments about the book on the Amazon site have been negative, calling it shameful and offensive, though some have defended the company’s stance on censorship.

Reader Comments (1)

We as a society have to draw the line somewhere. Weaseling out of responsibility by hiding behind the first amendment is not going to win Amazon any fans on this issue. Parenting sites and blogs on the web are calling for a boycott, there are now a couple of Facebook sites dedicated to an Amazon boycott, and netork, cable and print news outlets have all picked up the story. We have just begun the busy holiday shopping season and I'm sure Amazon was counting on a spike in Kindle sales. I suggest the Nook instead -- there are two options, both competitively priced, one can share books (unlike the Kindle), one can download books at their public library for free, and one can read any book in a Barnes and Noble store for free. And -- most importantly -- Barnes and Noble doesn't sell this sort of material.
